Some Information about your Garage Door:
To reduce weight, many newer Garage Doors are manufactured from thin steel sheet that is rolled or pressed into shape and then often clipped or screwed together. This creates problems, in that trading structural rigidity for decreased weight the Garage Door becomes flimsy and is easily damaged, with even the most subtle of knocks rendering the door unrepairable. The flexing of the door panels also creates stresses on the lift cables, chain, sprocket gears, wheels, hinges and so on, and if not properly maintained may break causing further damage with a snowball effect.

Don’t be mistaken though that the door itself is light! When set up correctly the Garage Door is a finely tuned balancing act. On one side you have the door itself, sometimes weighing several hundred kilos, on the other usually a spring or several springs tensioned to offset the weight of the door. If the springs aren’t tensioned correctly the door will either be too heavy or too light, both situations can be dangerous! This applies to Sectional doors, Tilt Doors as well as Roller Doors.

There are situations when the spring tension and balancing effect can be rendered useless, either when a spring breaks completely or when a cable breaks (Sectional Door) it is at this time that a door will come down on it’s own accord, with nothing to slow or prevent it’s falling. It is crucially important to check these parts carefully and regularly to locate faults and have them seen to before a major problem can arise.

The opener which drives your door is also an important part and therefore also deserves the same care and attention. Other than keeping them clean and surge protected the electronic components inside the opener, there is very little that can be done to prolong their longevity. They are however the single most important part of the opener as they receive the commands from your remote and then tell the other parts of the opener what to do. If not set correctly in the event of an emergency the door may not respond the way it is supposed to, causing potential damage to people or property. It is unfortunate that there are many inexperienced technicians out there that don’t have a thorough enough understanding of the mechanics behind door operation and can misdiagnose faults and change settings on the opener to compensate only to mask the true fault and to make the door unsafe to operate.

Being insured is one thing, getting the issue resolved is often something else! Your insurance company is a business, so therefore will try to maximise it’s profits wherever possible. This means they won’t always cover your claim, depending on what the problem is. It pays to carefully check your policy to assess exactly what you are covered for and what your not. If it’s normal wear and tear, you won’t be covered! Neglecting your door can often be an expensive lesson when you have to replace expensive parts like motors, circuit boards etc.
(Just like our unfortunate owner above, lizards are not covered!)
